Grgeteg:
with the curch of SAINT NICHOLAS
Between Belgrade and Novi Sad, seven kilometres from Irig on the slopes of Fruška Gora is the monastery Grgeteg. It can be reached from the monastery Krušedol by the road leading uphill to the turn right sign post and from there it's another four kilometres of bad road to the monastery. You pass the white cross and the old well and arrive at the gate. Legend has it that the monastery was errected by Vuk Grgurević, known among the people as Fiery Dragon. It was errected somewhere between 1459 - 1521 (before the Turkish conquest of Srem). The interior of this church is not so picturesque but the walls, ceilings and the inside of the dome are decorated with floral ornaments that make an exceptional impression. In its history the monastery offered sanctuary to many, so even the monks from the Slanci monastery near Belgrade stayed for a while there fleeing Turkish occupation. The tall monastery guesthouses surround the church in the shape of a rectangle. The new belltower, church and guesthouses were connected to each other so that all of them can be visited without going outside. The monastery is active and in the care of nuns and monks.
