The monasteries of Fruška Gora are an unique group of sacral buildings errected in the period from the XV to the XVIII century. Of the 35 monasteries built, 15 survive today. Their cultural and historical significance has put them under the protection of UNESCO. Those monasteries have represented through history the symbol of national resistance of Serbs against the Turkish Empire and the protectors of a great national treasure, embodied in the sacral art and architecture, preservation of the spirit and collective memory of the nation. Today the following monasteries are active: Krušedol, Petkovica, Rakovac, Velika Remeta, Divša, New Hopovo, Old Hopovo, Jazak, Mala Remeta, Grgeteg, Beočin, Privina Glava, Šišatovac, Kuvežedin and Vrdnik-Ravanica. According to historical sources these monasteries were errected in the first half of the sixteenth century, but legend has it that they were errected in the period between the twelfth and the fifteenth century. All the monasteries are located in an area that is 50 km long and 10 km wide. During five centuries they were the backbone of the spiritual and political life of Serbs. Formed in the period of the Great Migrations, the monasteries became the centres that cultivated the cult of the last autocratic family of the Branković's, modelled after the old Nemanjić dynasty as an historical role model. That explains the development of spiritual values in these monasteries as cults of individual saints, whose remains are kept in them. The monasteries Šišatovac, New Hopovo, Vrdnik-Ravanica, Beočin, Privina glava i Jazak still bear consequences of the NATO aviation bombing from 1999.
