The Mine
The brown coal mine in Vrdnik is classified as one of the oldest in Yugoslavia. The Vrdnik monastery opened it at the end of 1804. The Vrdnik mine was one of the oldest mines in the Kingdom of Slavonia, and the only one in Voyvodina. The fist exploitation of the mine was done by the monks of the Vrdnik monastery. The feudal family Pongrac was the owner of the mine untill October 31st, 1907, when an Austro-Hungarian noble bought the mine from them. After WWII the coal exploitation continues untill the year 1968, when it was flooded by thermal water.
