Vrdnik Tower

The Vrdnik Tower was errected, they say, in the Third century. Located in Fruška Gora, at about half an hours walk from Vrdnik, on top of a hill with dense wood. It is 18,5m tall and visible from afar. The entrance is a couple of meters above the ground and through the hollow wall a staircase leads to the next floor on which two windows of an irregular shape are located. It is also possible to descend into the tower, then climb up to the window from the other side... In the woods around it, the remains of the outer ring of wall can be found in which there is the entrance into the basement of the tower, which is unfortunately closed a few meters further. It is said that this basement has never been explored...numerous ventilation openings in the walls indicate the existence of some rooms inside. The hill on which the tower is situated is 383m high, so from there there is a magnificent view of the four sides of the world... that was precisely the purpose of the Tower, to control the surroundings and defend the roads that traversed at the foot of the hill. The Vrdnik tower belongs to the buildings of the medieval military architecture, probably built under the influence of the West. Some new research has discovered Roman foundations of this fort which are, according to some data, built by the Roman Emperor Probus. In the year 1521 the fort was taken by Turks and from that point it loses its military significance.
