Vrdnik

At first glance Vrdnik may seem as an ordinary village in Fruška Gora, but its history is special in many regards. In the late antiquity there was an important fortress in Vrdnik that guarded the southern part of the road Rednek - Dombo (Vrdnik - Rakovac) that connected the Danube shore and lower Srem. Untill the arrival of the Turks, Vrdnik maintained its significance as a mercantile and defence centre. At the beginning of the XVI century, Serbian monks founded the Vrdnik Monastery that gained importance particularly as a place of pilgrimage after the arrival of monks from the Ravanica Monastery, who brought with them the remains of Prince Lazar at the end of the XVII century. The area surrounding Vrdnik is one of the first areas in Europe that began to intensely exploit coal. Primitive exploitation dates back to 1804, while modern exploitation started in 1840. Vrdnik got its electricity power plant, railway and a numerous and diverse population. In 1931 in one of the places of the coal mine, a source of underwater medicinal water was discovered and that is where later the famous Spa Vrdnik was erected (Thermal).
