The monastery Velika Remeta is situated on the slopes of Fruška Gora Northeast of Irig in the forested environment near the source of the stream Šelovrenac. The monastery can be reached by the Beograd - Novi Sad road after you turn toward Iriški venac. You pass the signs for Grgeteg and Krušedol and you will come across the road sign for Velika Remeta. The first written mention dates from the time of the Turkish Sultan Suleyman the Second from 1541. The church is built of stone and brick with only one entrance and five very beautiful windows that have been touched by the hand of time. The monastery's guesthouses surround the monastery on all four sides making it ressemble a fortress. The big belltower dominates the monastery and it was errected in 1734/35. It is one of the oldest and surely the highest in Srem with its 38,60m and eight floors. In the monastery's guesthouses a large icon of the The Miraculous Mother of God framed by 1678 medallions is safeguarded. The museum of old serbian church music was founded in the guesthouses and contains artefacts and notes from the Middle Ages which were not the same shape as modern age notes. The monastery is active and in the care of nuns and monks.
